Provisions Mercantile

Established by Asheville natives Heather and Matt Wright, Provisions Mercantile was inspired by Heather’s grandmother, Claudene Mchone, who created a small general store in the basement of her West Asheville home in the 1960s. It served as a gathering place for the neighborhood and a resource for purchasing basic necessities. Heather remembers family stories of her dad and his siblings helping out at the store after school, and how her aunt would sneak the bulk candy as a child.
In late 2019, the Wrights opened the flagship mercantile in a former furniture store on Haywood Road in West Asheville, the same neighborhood where Heather’s grandmother created her general store some 60 years earlier. Over the last seven years Provisions Mercantile has indeed become a gathering place through their in-store events and is known as an excellent place to purchase gifts. Visiting the shop is always a pleasure, especially with the Wrights’ goldendoodle, Beau, as the ever friendly greeter.
The space is bright and inviting, with large windows and high ceilings. The staff is always ready to help if you need guidance when buying gifts. There is a wide range of items available, but we definitely think of Provisions Mercantile for gifts related to food, drink, table decor, and kitchen gadgets. They have an extensive collection of locally sources products, so this is a great place to purchase items to remember Asheville.
- Free street parking is available along Haywood Road in marked spaces.
- Pay-to-park lots are located behind the shop and at Grace Baptist Church, just a few doors down.
Next door to Provisions Mercantile is WAXON and Sparky’s Toys & Gifts, and with Instant Karma across the street this corner of Haywood Road and Brevard Road is definitely the place to stop and shop.
