Character Study Bar

Literary, attentive, $9 daily specials and $8 books.

Character Study is transformed into Scare-acter Study for the month of October with Halloween themed decor and cocktails.

Character Study is West Asheville’s literary-themed neighborhood cocktail bar, where literature and libations intertwine. Stop by for carefully crafted cocktails, daily $9 drink specials, and a curated selection of $8 books from their partnership with Bagatelle Books. Every book on the shelves at Character Study is hand-picked and pairs perfectly with a cocktail. Sip a cocktail, browse the stacks, take one home with you.

Not only are the bartenders at Character Study skilled at their craft, they are working from a delightful menu where each cocktail is described in literary terms by Mood and Character.

Some examples:

Seersucker Martini – Uncle Val’s Botanical Gin, Vodka, Carpano Bianco Vermouth, Ancho Reyes Verde, Saline, Absinthe
• Mood: Rakish gardening in formal wear
• Character: Refined, with a poblano pepper wink

Le Guin & Tonic (Or: The Ursula) – Plymouth Gin, Fever Tree Elderflower Tonic, Grapefruit Essence
• Mood: We live in the best of all possible worlds
• Character: A drink of laughter and forgetting

Tale of 75 Lions – Bourbon, Sugar, Lime, Allspice Dram, Sparkling
• Mood: Celebrating vanquished foes
• Character: Whiskey-eyed, sharp-tongued French 75

Each day there is one signature cocktail available for $9. Check out the board by the bar or ask the bartender for today’s offering.

Order at the bar, take a seat there or choose a spot amongst the books. There are secluded two tops and comfortable booths for four along the front walls. In the back area are circular booths perfect for gathering together larger groups.

Wine and beer is also available as well as a fine selection of NA beverages and excellent spirit-free cocktails.

On the second & fourth Mondays Character Study is home to a Reading Party hosted by Otterpine, an independent Asheville small press. This cozy, introvert-friendly evening of books, quiet reading, and good company starts at 5:30pm, with 6:00-7:00pm designated as quiet reading time (audio books welcome with headphones), quiet crafting, drawing, etc. After the hour of silent time, participants are encouraged to discuss and share recommendations with fellow book lovers. Please register on their website if you plan to attend. Readers are welcome to bring a book from home or can purchase a new-to-them used book from the bar.
