Wednesdays this winter, bust out the dance moves at the Hop Ice Creamery’s free all-ages dance parties hosted by Asheville’s own Underdog B-Boy/B-Girl Crew!
Everyone of any age or skill level is invited to come out to the Hop’s 167 Haywood Road production location between 6 and 9 p.m. to watch some great dance action and try out some moves for themselves. “This is all about fun and exploration,” says Hop co-owner Greg Garrison. “There’s no pressure. Just do what you want to do.”
The idea grew out of the collaboration between the Hop and the Underdog Crew, which usually performs downtown during warm weather. The group was looking for a place to gather over the winter, and Garrison was looking to grow more community and family events. “It all came together in a really awesome way,” Garrison says. “The goal is to provide a place that creates moments for families without them having to spend a lot of money.”
“We’re really grateful to Greg. He’s been a supporter for a long time,” says Underdog Crew coordinator Joe Adams. Adams and Underdog have long been involved in education and outreach through creativity and dance, and Adams hosts break-dance workshops around Asheville. He wants this event to continue that momentum. “It’s really about freedom of expression,” he says. “Parents can bring their kids, come check it out, be immersed by the culture and see if they are interested.”
The event will feature an actual dance floor and music DJ’d by Adams, and anyone wanting some instruction can get a helpful tips from more experienced dancers. And of course, the Hop’s famous ice cream will also be available.
Greg and Ashley Garrison opened the Hop West ice cream shop at 721 Haywood Road in 2010 as a sister shop to their Merrimon Avenue location (and are celebrating its 5th anniversary on November 5, 2015). The Ice Creamery opened in January 2015 and now produces some 800-900 gallons of ice cream for the West Asheville shop and more than 40 wholesale clients throughout Western North Carolina and beyond. Since the creamery’s opening, it has hosted weekly tastings every Friday, events made popular by themed nights and special additions to its unique menu of ice cream flavors, as well as birthday parties and field trips.
“We’re just having so much fun with it,” Garrison says. “And we want people to come in here and have fun too.”
