On October 21, 2015 the two West Asheville restaurants are banding together to serve a fantastic meal at Haywood Street Congregation’s Downtown Welcome Table. Every Wednesday, the HSC serves dinner to between 400 and 500 people at its downtown ministry, with food cooked from scratch. The meal is served family-style, at dining tables with white tablecloths, linen napkins, flowers, real dishes and silverware. Twice each month, restaurants like Sunny Point and the Barleycorn step up to provide a meal of their own.

“We offer love and welcome to everyone who comes through the door,” says HSC Companion Coordinator Emily Bentley. “And one of the biggest ways we can do that is share a meal with them.”

Since she got involved a few years ago, Curate and Nightbell restaurants owner Liz Button has been coordinating participating chefs, and has seen the momentum build from six restaurants participating to more than 30. “I used to make lots of calls to enlist restaurants, now they are reaching out to me,” she says. That includes some of Asheville’s premiere dining destinations, and Sunny Point and the Barleycorn are ready to bring a taste of West Asheville to the table.

“We went to Haywood Street Congregation and saw how it was run and we were really impressed,” says Sunny Point co-owner April Harper. “I feel really honored that we are participating in something so community based.”

For Greg Campbell, Chef and General Manager at the Barleycorn, the experience gives his restaurant a chance to be part of the larger Asheville community.

“It’s another way for us to get out there and introduce ourselves and apply what we know to help those less fortunate than us,” Campbell says. “This is an opportunity for us to get involved in helping the broader community.”

Also, he points out, restaurant workers often interact with people experiencing homeless issues and the Welcome Table gives them and patrons a constructive way to give to those in need.

100% of donations collected in the Welcome Table envelopes will go directly to helping Sunny Point and the Barleycorn provide a great dining experience, and Harper says so far the response from diners has been exceptionally generous.

“We’ve been really happy with how many of our patrons have participated. We have pretty community minded patrons,” she says.

The Downtown Welcome Table takes place every Wednesday at the Haywood Street Congregation. Restaurants wanting to participate in this great cause can contact Liz Button at liz@heirloomhg.com.
