Brace yourselves! Winter is coming. And that means Second Gear, Haywood Road’s outdoor consignment shop, will begin accepting winter clothing and equipment starting Monday, November 16, 2015.
The seasonal switch is a great time to unload everything from winter jackets, fleece, and ski pants to snowboards, goggles, helmets and boots. And for winter sports enthusiasts, it’s a great time to snap up gear.
“We’ve got a strong, loyal following of customers who come back every year or even every month or week to see what is out on the floor,” says co-owner Russ Towers. Especially popular are top tier outdoor brands like Patagonia, Mountain Hardware, Arc’teryx and The North Face.
New to consignment? The Second Gear staff is ready to help price clothing and equipment to sell. “We’ve gotten savvy to the ins and outs of pricing over the years,” Towers says. “Most gear sells within the first month or two.”

Towers and partners opened Second Gear’s West Asheville location in 2004 in the same building that is home to Harvest Records. The response was so positive that the shop needed more room, and it moved across the street to 444 Haywood Road in 2008. It expanded again in 2011, doubling its space, and underwent a major updating completed last year as part of the historic renovation of the 1920s’-built Mardis Building.
“It is amazing how it has blown up,” Towers says. In the past year, he says, sales have increased by a whopping 70 percent. The store has also seen an increase in traffic by out-of-towners. Initially, customers from outside Asheville made up about 10 percent of sales. “I bet it’s 30 to 40 percent now,” he says. Towers credits Haywood Road’s walkability, local flavor and the arrival of a variety of more retail options with bringing more visitors to West Asheville. “People like to go where the locals go, and we see a lot of people wander in who are exploring the shops on Haywood Road.”
The store has built a loyal following on a reputation for a big selection of second hand gear, but it also carries some new accessories and dealer samples of apparel, outerwear and accessories on consignment from outdoor gear representatives.
Shoppers can also find an assortment of locally-produced equipment from the likes of Astral Buoyancy, Eagle’s Nest Outfitters, and Common Ground books, and the shop’s tee shirts are made a couple of doors down at Image 420.
“There’s real value in supporting local economy,” Towers says. “It’s all a circle, and we get to be part of that.”
